we were in berlin at zurmoebelfabrik
the location was a tv lounge - a cellar club with different rooms and
lots of tvs and one big screan. drinks were cheap - it was unpretentios
and nice!

i met uta in roma:
pouring rain in rome- not good for an outside party - party delayed till
13th of june. uta was very disappointed.
BUT-i got this email from uta NOW:
It was veeeerry nice, although in the morning the skies didn`t look so enthusiastic
and
I
was still had concerns that the party might be called off due to bad weather.
But the dear dear sun did come out afterall and the festivities could begin
at six.
We had a wonderfully chilled out party with a gold-red sunset, dj sets and
potatosalad.
At nine, when it was dark, I gave a quick talk in Italian to explaing the
whole thing -
stutter, stutter, applause. And then at the end, the magical dvd. Everyone
found it great.

and this is how it went:
It did go really good! Some folks here do know Monika`s music as they listen
to OCR every friday
(which thanks to you and Thomas and Thom Thiel comes in original form on air
at our regional radio station),
so they came knowing what to expect, which made me happy (as I suspect, not
many records,
that you release, can be actually bought here). Nevertheless, the cinema room
was full and the
reaction was really warm. Ppl used to come up and ask to repeat Cobra Killer
and Barbara part....
It seems, that the only one person, who failed to watch Monica on the big
screen was me,
as I was playing your records in the chill-out bar. BTW, after that party,
I got an offer to
spin in other places (lounge bar), which is kinda interesting, but I feel
embarassed when striptease-girls
(yes that other venue has a streap-tease room) reach for my bodyparts while
I spin on stage.
I feel better in the dark with ppl listening, not staring at the naked girls,
so I still think about that offer.
Anyway, thank you for that wonderful possibility to bring ppl more interesting
music!
I hope one day you could come here and see what is happening in clubbing Siberia

. Let me tell you that yesterday in here we made the Monika?s
Himmelfahrt party . More than 80 people enjoyed the video. A nice woman played
live, she's called Cindi 2000. Some people form the Goethe Institut were
there and enjoyed the party really well.
I made a dj set with most of the records you gave me and helped me
to get and we really had a nice time.

the monika party went very well and the venue was packed that night:
the little street outside the venue on the water front was all parked with
private vehicles that night. we had around 200 people come to the party,
most of them are the most interesting people in the town, they were so eager
to see who's monika. people were attracted by the audio visual things. they
liked the space, the music "BBQ" we "cooked" for them.
they found a reason
to come out and have a drink with good friends...

Hey! it was sehr ok. We had a good time but the owners mistakenly
double booked the night, so the other DJs went on at 1am. Schade!
But I played the dvd (it's great, btw) for a little while (barbara, cobra
killer,
komeit and masha) and then we played more records. I put the flyers
all over the place. It would have been more relaxed in a living room
rather than a bar, but we had spass. Lots of spass...immer.
GG:- isnt double booking a typical new york thing? -oh im glad this habit
doesnt exist elsewhere - cause its kind of counterproductive isnt it...

Everything went well here in minneapolis for the Ascencion party, I
really enjoyed the DVD - the visuals are really great, especially the
planes taking off overhead repeated... I had people come up to the DJ
booth complimenting and curious about the music and the postcards
were handed out and taken from the main table where they were laid out.

...and i liked that people were coming and telling to me during party
that they liked Masha Qrella, CONTRIVA, other were impressed by
visuals of Barbara Morgenstern and some asked to repeat number of
COBRA KILLER ;) So, there were positive vibes at our event.

drama ended up being SO FUN, I had all those records you sent me
WAAAAAY back, the Contriva 12', Masha Qrella 7's, Burka band,
Barbara's LP, some other things
like Notwist remix 12' and To Roccoco Rot vinyl I got from City
Slang....and some cheesy disco like the stuff outta Detroit on that label
which puts out DABRYE...and some FOUR TET & MANITOBA who are
coming here soon...
All of it sounded KILLER on a big soundsystem, which is the indulgent
part of Djing- I LOVE IT!!
Anyway it ended up being a nice cozy night inside from the rain with
some drinks and good music and a little fireplace even...
So it was OK in the end but nothing like what it was supposed to be!!
which is OK too. Oh well we tried.
Aaaaahhhh....wow it's amazing all thesa parties happened all over the
place...in such random ways!! COOL!!

the Monika label record party event was held by Andrew at hullabaloo
records:
Andrew Jones spinning the store dollar records mixed in with monika
music. The Deep Element performing.
Eustachian performing. Travis (machine drum) playing guitar.
Then stereodee performing her great blend of electronic and shoegaze.
After the performances we sat around and got high and watched the
himmelfahrt/ascension DVD and it was great. A fun time was had by all!
I figured you may appreciate a glimpse into how us indie kids get down in
(very
hot) florida in the summer - we spend our days inside record shops
drinking miller high life and red stripe and listening to great music!

with their ascension night at the berlin volksbühne monika enterprise
presented five impressive concerts of those five bands and projects that are
the core of the berlin label's catalogue. after years of work and countless
concerts of each individual band this night together was the time to lift
their music up onto a higher level. especially for this evening javier benitez,
niklas goldbach and the video-group transforma produced videos, that - hugely
projected onto the back of the stage - gave each concert its own atmosphere.
now you are invited to celebrate once more with monika, and from now on every
day of the year...

enterprise fünf eindrucksvolle konzerte der bands und projekte, die gleichzeitig
den künstlerstamm dieses berliner labels bilden. hier war die gelegenheit
nach langjähriger arbeit mit zahllosen konzerten, die musik vereint auf
eine neue stufe zu heben. eigens für den abend wurden von javier benitez,
niklas goldbach und der videogruppe transforma videos produziert, die per
haushoher rückprojektion jedem konzert seine ganz eigene stimmung gab.

The Label Monika
Enterprise
the name monika was given to the label by its founder gudrun gut as a posthumous
tribute to her beloved goldfish of the same name, who, driven by its suicidal
tendencies, jumped out of her own tank. so monika's ascension is at the same
time celebrating the memory of the fish that died to give the label its name.
of course there is only one date which could live up to this occasion.
"the day, on which a man, who wasn't quite as famous as the beatles,
went to heaven, according to mythology." (debug)
ascension, taken out of its biblical context, can also be transferred to that
of the music scene - the independent labels in their living room offices.
while the major industry finds itself in a state of crisis, the group of allies
interested in smaller labels is increasing each year. at the ascension party
in the berlin volksbühne on may 29th 2003, monika enterprise presented
itself in its full intimate glory. the concerts were enriched by projections
of berlin video artists niklas goldbach, javier benitez & the video-group
transforma with an individual piece for each act.

Komëit
haben den Zartcore erfunden. Oder nenn es ruhig, besinnlich, romantisch,
konzentriert, aber auch Songschreiben und nicht zuletzt Pop. Julia Kliemann und Chris Flor haben sich
ein eigenes Universum geschaffen mit einer feinen Linie zu Low, Codeine, den
Pastels und Brian Eno. So ziehen uns ihre zwei zarten Stimmen fast hypnotisch
in die Komëitwelt – Widerstand zwecklos.

deliberately opened up a space of silence with their latest release "falling
into place" - that just recently was resurrected and paid homage to by
robert lippok, who remixed the whole album on his release "falling into
komëit". in this space julia kliemann and chris flor created an
own universe that keeps inviting us in, with their two tender voices, their
calm, romantic and song-orientated music. the world of komëit is a place
of beauty that is hypnotizing again and again.

Qrella (Contriva/Mina) ist persönlich;
erst langsam und sperrig, schmiegt sie sich dann warm und elegant in jeden
Raum ein und bleibt dort noch lange präsent, auch nachdem der letzte
Ton schon eine Weile verklungen ist. Unsere Perle!
Ihr Soloalbum 'Luck’ erreichte Platz 15 in
den Intro Top50 2002, in den De:Bug Jahrescharts sogar Platz 6. Von den Intro-Lesern
wurde sie als Künstlerin des Jahres auf Platz 7 gewählt. Die In-
und Ausländische Presse ist euphorisch, Calexico fragten Masha als Toursupport
für die Europatour an (April03), und obendrein wurde 'Luck’ auch nach Japan lizensiert.
masha qrella's (contriva/mina) solo release "luck" caused a sensation
in many places, since it was so unexpected and impressive at the same time.
it is almost impossible to avoid being drawn into her songs, it feels so good
being captured by them. her music, slow and difficult at first, then warm
and elegant, penetrates the heart and lingers there, even after the last note
has long faded away. in addition to her album she recently played a lot of
concerts, including opening for the calexico european tour.

and used the theatre light: cobra killer say that they want to heal with their
music. and looking at their audiences it soon becomes clear just what is meant
by that. they have the effect of medicine on their listeners - and their fans
anyway. nobody can escape the grip of scarcely dressed gina d'orio and annika
trost, drowning themselves in red wine and throwing their songs into the faces
of the audience. some people would even fight poisonous snakes to be a part
of this. they are loud and hot and definitely take any location captive. that
way they even knocked out sonic youth: „we played a couple of shows
these last few nights in germany with a band called cobra killer that completely
knocked us out..." (thurston moore)

Contrivas leichte, manchmal ins Selbstvergessene kippende Nachdenklichkeit
ruht auf Gitarrenslides und melodiösen Bassläufen, die von dichten
Schlagzeugbeats verjüngt werden. Das Melancholische der kreiselnden Akustikgitarre,
das Verspielte der Orgelakzente und das Aufrüttelnde vereinzelter Rockausbrüche
driften dabei nie in schwelgerischen Selbstzweck ab. Auf erfrischendste Weise
umschifft die Band Dilletantismus genauso erfolgreich wie Muckertum. Contriva

contriva are constructing
soundscapes in the context of a band, and they do it in a unique way. slide
guitars, melodious bass lines, rejuvenated by dense drum beats, all this adds
up to a sound of thoughtfulness that sometimes tips over into introvertedness.
the melancholy of circling acoustic guitars, the playfulness of the accented
organ and the shake-and-wake rock eruptions never fall into the trap of becoming
too kitschy. in a refreshing way the band successfully navigates its way around
all forms of dilettantism as well as rockism. in other words: contriva flows.
